Benefits Return to the top of the page

The benefits of the new laptop HOLMES solution are:

  • Availability of incident data whenever and wherever it is required, no matter how remote or isolated the location.
  • Full HOLMES 2 functionality on a single laptop including Searching, Court Printing and full Disclosure functions.
  • The exact same User Interface as the HOLMES 2 application already in use in the Force.
  • Access to a HOLMES 2 system in court without the need for Thin Client and telephony.

Background Return to the top of the page

Courts, and especially the defence barristers, are becoming more and more demanding in requesting information related to an enquiry that is not contained within the case file. It is a fact nowadays that the majority of murder trials necessitate the need for instant access to the HOLMES 2 database to provide the necessary documentation or supporting information.

Many Forces find that several of their high profile cases, for various reasons, are listed for hearing at Crown Courts outside of their Force area. The lack of instant access to the database has led to delays in court proceedings. Moreover, many cases now involve enquiries overseas where the need for easy access to all current information can be imperative.

With the advances in current technology, Unisys has taken the opportunity to enhance HOLMES 2 to provide all Forces with greater versatility of the solution and enable it to be further deployed through the Laptop HOLMES solution.

Many Potential Uses Return to the top of the page

Laptop HOLMES will open up many business uses with ease of use and flexibility in mind. Complete enquiries can be hosted on the laptop giving immediate access to aid the varying challenges that the Police face in the management of enquiry and case information such as:

  • The system will be most useful in court giving full access to all the case material, documents, exhibits and the full enquiry database. Statements and documents can be printed in full compliance with national and local disclosure rules. If further actions are required these can also be raised in situe ensuring that any further enquiries raised at court are documented for future disclosure. This will reduce the amount of time that is spent by case officers reproducing these documents.
  • Senior Investigating Officer’s can have access to their enquiry data at remote locations thus ensuring that they can be fully briefed and their memories refreshed prior to trial dates, which can be months after the charge date.
  • Access to all data when in case conferences with both prosecution and defence examiners, wherever the conference is held.
  • Incidents that require a true mobile solution. Laptop HOLMES can easily be taken to the scene of a crime or a major disaster and used immediately to manage and record the collection of exhibits. This will save having to re-key them at a later time, whilst also protecting the continuity and integrity of the original exhibit in the evidence chain. Very large scenes such as experienced in a bombing incident or plane crash would find this invaluable.
  • Public Reviews and case assessments that require groups or bodies who do not have direct access to the Force’s existing HOLMES 2 system, can transfer the relevant job to Laptop HOLMES and then conduct their reviews wherever required, without any disruption to an ongoing enquiry.

The Solution Return to the top of the page

  • Using the latest Virtual Machine technology, the HOLMES 2 Oracle database is run as a virtual server which is then accessed by the standard HOLMES 2 application components on a laptop.
  • The application offers the same flexible functionality as the original HOLMES 2. It offers both Incident Room for major investigations and Casualty Bureau for major disasters.
  • Major investigation information can be automatically transferred from HOLMES 2 to Laptop HOLMES.
  • Facilities exist to easily manage both documents and actions. Through integration with i2 and Autonomy software, the application provides the same complex searching tools and the graphical representation of information within a document.
  • Several incidents are able to be held on Laptop HOLMES to allow a linked series of incidents to be viewed, updated or researched.
